The Tale of Lohengrin, Knight of the Swan

T. W. Rolleston; Willy Pogany

George Harrap & Co. 1913

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Near Fine  |

Tremendous limited edition of Pogany's presentation of the Tale of Lohengrin. One of 525 copies of which this is number 369, signed by Willy Pogany, illustrator and designer. The text by Rolleston was adapted from Richard Wagner's opera of the same name which was derived from the Arthurian Legends of Lohengrin, son of Parzival (percival), A knight of the Holy Grail - which itself draws on the medieval tales of the Swan Knight, a mysterious rescuer who appears in a boat drawn by Swans. Pogany's edition is lavishly decorated in a manuscript style, with decorated initials, copious colour and black/white illustrations throughout with 8 tipped in colour plates. This is a particularly scarce copy, bounding in fetching, leather-esque blue crushed cloth. With gilt titling and design to cover. Top edge gilt. Fore edge uncut. Printed on thick grey paper. Some minor shelfwear to covers. Contents prim and clean, tight. Near fine condition. A spectacular volume.
