The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Memoirs of my Life (9 volumes)

Edward Gibbon

The Folio Society 1983

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Good  |

Handsome burgundy cloth edition of Gibbon's revolutionary history of the Roman Empire including his interpretation of its decline and fall. Not just a landmark in the genre of history writing but also as an example of Enlightenment thinking. Complete with 'Memoirs of my Life' in which he talks candidly about his life and beliefs and about his most notable work. Features b/w images throughout. Published from 1983 to 1990, each volume has a slipcase. Maps to endpapers tracing the declining territories of the Empire. Slipcases have general shelfwear, rubbing and marking, some have limited splitting to edges. Volumes are variously lightly bumped, and marked. But contents are crisp and clean. Good condition overall.
