Eikon Basilike: The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in His Solitude and Sufferings

Charles I; John Gauden

Puffin; Penguin 1649

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Fair  |

'Together with his private prayers used in the time of his restraint, and delivered to D. Juxon, Bishop of London, immediately before his death.' One of the many editions of the purported autobiographical account of Charles I's imprisonment, depicting him as a martyr. John Gauden, Bishop of Worcester, later claimed authorship but its true author remains uncertain. The popularity of this piece of Royalist propaganda prompted Parliament to commission a rebuttal by John Milton, the Eikonoklastes. This edition does not contain the famous frontispiece by William Marshall but does contain a description of it. With a new frontisportrait of the King. Full leather with raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. 8vo. [v]263pp. Front board detached. Wear and splitting to top of spine. Occasional light marking and toning within, otherwise textblock is tight and clean. Fair+
