'From the foundation of the City to the sole rule of Julius Caesar'. Splendid special quarter leather Folio Society edition of Mommsen's classic work of Roman History published in three volumes from 1854-1856. Mommsen considered Caesar the paragon of enlightened leadership and sought to apply the lessons of Roman politics to his own time. Such was his admiration of Caesar, it is said Mommsen left the book unfinished so as to not describe his murder. A subsequent volume which would have dealt with the Roman Emperors was not published due to its criticisms of contemporary German politics. With b/w maps and images. Maps to endpapers. Top edge gilt. Cloth boards with gilt design by Simon Brett. Complete with slipcase. Slipcase has some light shelfwear and volume has a couple of small nicks to the leather. But contents are crisp and pristine. Very good+
