The Diary of Samuel Pepys (eleven volumes)

Samuel Pepys; Robert Latham & William Matthews (editors)

The Folio Society 2003

Binding:  Hardback  |  Condition: Very Good  |

Marvelous special Folio Society limited edition of Pepys' Diaries. A 'New and Complete Transcription' edited by Latham and Matthews with further contributing editors. Contains the complete diary from 1660 to 1669 in nine volumes with a diary index and a diary companion. Pepys' Diary was written in shorthand and occasionally, when further privacy was required, a melange of Spanish, French and Italian and thus not meant for immediate public consumption. Accordingly it provides an unfettered insight into his private life and the social mores of the 17th century. Pepys was also an assiduous chronicler of his age, recording the restoration of Charles II, The Anglo-Dutch War, the Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London. This is the definitive edition of an astonishingly valuable historical and social document. This edition is limited to 1000 sets, of which this is number 342. Small 8vo. (225x150mm) Bound in quarter Nigerian Morocco leather with marbled boards. All edges gilt. This set would most likely have been issued in a wooden presentation case which is now missing. Occasional very light shelfwear and marking/creasing to leather. But contents uniformly crisp and pristine. A very pleasing set. Very good+
