Handsome full leather tree calf set of Shakespeare's works featuring 66 illustrations from the Boydell Gallery. Containing all Histories, Tragedies, Comedies and his poems including Venus and Adonis and the Sonnets. The Boydell Gallery was an ambitious project commenced in the late 18th century by John Boydell. He commissioned paintings based on Shakespeare's work by the leading artists of the day, including Joshua Reynolds, James Northcote, Robert Smirke etc. intending to open a gallery of the art plus a folio of engravings and an illustrated edition. This edition features 66 of those engravings including the standout pieces including Benjamin West's from King Lear and Northcote's Princes in the tower. Bound by Bickers. With raised bands and gilt decoration. All edges gilt. Inner and outer dentelles. With frontisportrait, preface, dedication from the first folio and some lines on the portrait of Shakespeare. 8vo. (226x160mm) Some volumes have been unobtrusively rebacked and inner hinges reinfoced. Some bumping and rubbing to leather. Occasional spotting within. Good.
