First edition, first issue in book form, with first state points (100£ etc.) The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit appeared in serial form from January 1843 to July 1844 and, despite Dickens' positivity towards the work, the story was not financially successful. This was a major spur in Dickens writing and publishing A Christmas Carol in December 1843, which revisits some of the same themes as Chuzzlewit. Complete with 40 b/w illustrations by Phiz, including the frontispiece and engraved title page. Pleasant recent rebinding in half leather with marbled paper to boards. Raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. Marbling to page edges. 8vo. [xii] 624pp. Spotting and toning within, most noticeably to edges of plates. Some mild rubbing to leather. Binding square and tight, a handsome and sturdy example. Very good.
